In this opinion piece I going to delve into the 5 changes I would make if I was running this event. Some are bigger than others but all I think all would make for a better event. I know that there is no way all of these would get implemented but one can dream.
I will also preface this article by saying Black-Ops was my one of my top 3 events I’ve ever ran, so I’m not suggesting blowing it up or anything. I think the event doesn’t really need massive changes but more some small tweaks. I think after reading this article you’ll see what I mean.
More quads helping get racers gear up to the tent village. That shouldn’t be part of the challenge. I know it’s not as easy as just saying that so I understand this change probably won’t happen.
The bibs should be ordered in a way similar to how you order your finisher shirt. As someone who fits a men’s medium or large on a swole day, wearing a XL bib felt ridiculous especially during the opening lap where most racers went out without hydration vests or any extra gear. Maybe if I get lucky I’ll get another growth spurt before my next Black-Ops experience and this won’t be a problem but at 35 I doubt it.
Racers can’t stop within sight of the finish line to wait out the clock before finishing. I don’t care if they all stop 200 meters away just below a hill or something before the finish. While I openly admit I did it this year, I feel like it takes away from the spirit of the challenge. I also think a horde of racers coming out of nowhere right as the closing window opens would create a great photo-op.
Change the finishing window from hours 11 until 12 to hours 12 until 13. Make it a twelve-hour race instead of eleven, I wouldn’t change the way it’s advertised but I feel like that change would make the race truer to its billing. If you finish after that window you’re not a “finisher”. Logistically it wouldn’t be hard to pull off as the venue said we had all day and even into the night to vacate, meaning one more hour wouldn’t affect that.
I would change the rule concerning what a finisher is defined as. As it stands now you only need to run a lap off the start and one that concludes during the finishing window for a total of 2. However, if you run one of the other X Warrior Titan events you must complete 3 laps with half the time frame. Those event also tend to have laps being 2 or less kilometres shorter than the loop at this event. X Warrior considers Black-Ops a Titan event so it seems reasonable to me to require racers to complete 3 laps to be a true finisher. This change wouldn’t really be hard to implement either.
So, there they are my 5 changes. Again, not earth shattering or anything but I think these little changes could go a long way. What do you think? Agree or disagree leave me a comment and I’m willing to hear what you think of my ideas.
