Weekly Training Post: Week 4, 2018

Week 4 was easily my best week so far in 2018. I was able to get 95% of my training in and it also felt really good. I did 4 strength sessions and 2 out of my 3 runs, I even had a long yoga session to help loosen up at the end of the week.

The biggest thing I worked on this week is breath control which I’m learning the SealFit method, which going well but is actually having some interesting side effects on my training. I’ve found that using this technique my heart rate doesn’t spike nearly as high so I’m able to train/run harder, longer, and lift heavier although my Fitbit seems to think I’m now taking it to easy as my calorie output it’s calculating is lower than before for the same workouts or running speed. Now obviously this will be very beneficial come race time as it will hopefully eliminate the bonk I’m prone to getting from starting off to fast or poor breath control during the event. Also, I adopted a more flexible training plan as I’ve found having set workouts for certain days just doesn’t work with my crazy schedule, so now my rest days can be all little more randomly placed for whatever day getting a workout done is just not possible. Now my week roughly looks like: Monday – strength, Tuesday – strength then run, Wednesday – is either strength or rest day, Thursday – run, Friday – hardest strength session of the week, Saturday – the opposite of Wednesday, and Sunday – run. But the nice thing is any session can all be moved around as needed.

The other real positive for training this week was catching up with a friend who is working towards the same race and exchanging training techniques as well as motivation for the race. Having those talks always has a way of making the workouts the rest of the week easier. We also are focused on getting a whole team organized for the X Warrior Challenge Stadium Sprint in May so if you’re interested in earning some extra swag at the race whether you actually want to run on a team or by yourself comment below and I’ll show you how to sign up to get some extra freebies by joining our team.
