Race Review: 2017 X Run by X Warrior Challenge

Location:  Poppy Plaza, Calgary, Alberta

 

Weather: Not a bad day for Calgary this late in October, 13°C during race time.

 

Festival Area: Not bad for a condensed space. X Warrior had their merchandise tent set-up, a free coffee booth, a couple of gyms had tents, and a massage/therapy booth too.

 

Course Conditions: Paved path so the course was consistent and in good shape.

 

Course Layout: Running along the same loop as last year’s run, there was an even split of “penalty” stations on the first half as the second. With mountain climbers, push-ups, V sit-ups, burpees, and squats being the challenges in the first half. After crossing the bridge at Crowchild Trial the second half challenges were pretty similar with only the sit-ups being replaced with burpee jacks.

 

Favorite Challenge Station: This year it was the burpees, heresy I know, but more because it’s where I felt I was gaining time. So not really for the “enjoyment” of burpees but more from a speed point of view.

 

Favorite Aspect: Much the same as last year, the scenery of being right on the outskirts of downtown makes this one of the more picturesque races I’ve done.

 

Race Synopsis: Doing these X Runs it always important that it’s all you vs. yourself as it’s not timed, unless you time yourself. There’s no obstacles and the penalties are optional so you have to challenge yourself. I want to do the hardest version possible so I’m not going to skip any stations or reps just get them done as fast as possible. I felt really good running this race and when I look back to running this event last year I was faster and stronger which enabled me to crush my goal time by almost 20 minutes, but most importantly no shin splints.

Biggest Critique: The burpee jack station location was poorly chosen, it was a spot that was being reseeded so it had a protective netting which got caught on your shoes as you did your reps. I would have switched it for squats or push-ups.

 

Lessons Learnt:

  • How much the mobility stretches for running has paid off as I felt better, hurt less and was faster by a lot from 2016
  • My strength training paid off as I was gaining time at all the challenges
  • That I am quite happy to now take some time off, plan for next year’s season, keep working on my nutrition and then get after it
