Weather: Hot without a cloud in the sky, it was an easy sunburn day at 28°C
Festival Area: The area shifted from last year a little bit, had some new vendors plus the usual returning ones. Quite a few sitting areas with good views of the start of the course and some standing areas with some awesome views of the tail end of the course.
Course Conditions: The motocross track was dry, hard packed. They used all the changes in terrain really well this year as we went up and down a lot, with a few slews thrown in just to make things interesting.
Course Layout: Much like Red Deer it was broken up into running sections and then an obstacles group of 2-4 obstacles stacked close together. Early on they hit us with a very muddy, very long Barbed Wire Crawl which had you running with the extra weight of the mud caked on you for ways after. The course designers kept picking obstacles that would tax the same muscles back to back quite frequently, such as Herc Hoist to Plate Drag or Monkey Bars right into the Multi Rig. Using all the hills and any change in pitch to make the obstacles as challenging as possible they increased the challenge from the last few years much like they had in Red Deer.
Favorite Standard Obstacle: For the second race in a row it was the Herc Hoist, mostly because coming up right after the muddy Barbed Wire Crawl it was hard to get a good grip on the rope and I almost lost it at one point but was able to save it to avoid burpees.
Favorite Unique Obstacle: Rocks and Logs, using the Motocross trials area they use for a Red Bull event of the same name this “obstacle” had us balancing, jumping and scrambling over rocks, boulders, large dirt steps and horizontal logs.
Favorite Aspect (not obstacle): The use of terrain. I can’t say enough about how well this course used the little space they had, plus they were able to use a part of the facility I hadn’t seen before to fit in a Super the next day.
Race Synopsis: I wasn’t fast as I wanted to be but that’s entirely my own fault as I hadn’t done enough run training leading in. On the strength obstacles felt pretty good especially the tough bucket carry and very steep sandbag carry. Overall a little disappointed but it’s in myself and not the organizers.
Total Burpees: 120 burpees
So, failed the Rig and Rope Climb which is status quo. The Rig I made it about halfway before getting completely turned around and then unable to hang on. The Rope I made it halfway as well before I just couldn’t get any further after being stuck for what seemed like a couple of minutes. I also failed Olympus this time which was frustrating after beating it so well in Red Deer, made it about a third of the way and then just seemed to completely forget what I was doing or the technique I was trying to use. Then failed the Spear Throw right after (maybe 30 feet) later, I threw a little too hard and the tip wasn’t pointing the down enough to stick in the target.

Biggest Critique: Very small and completely self-absorbed but one the obstacle photographers missed shots at their obstacle for the elite, competitive and first few open heats. It was a really cool backdrop for that angle so I was really hoping for some action pics from there.
Lessons Learnt: Despite being in the middle of the city you really need to have your hill sprints trained for the Calgary race. Also, not to focus on a time goal but more of a percentage goal in case they keep making these Sprint courses on the long side.
